Conversion of a 30 ton Split System to a 30 ton Package Unit

Service Unlimited, Inc. completed an HVAC system conversion at Independence School, replacing an existing 30-ton split system with a new 30-ton Carrier packaged unit. The project relocated the indoor air-handling equipment’s function to a single outdoor unit while retaining the building’s existing air distribution system.

Removing the original air handling unit presented a significant access challenge. Located in the second-floor mechanical room, the equipment was dismantled and removed through an opening in the exterior wall. The work required careful coordination between the crew inside the building and the team operating lifting equipment outside.

The new packaged unit was installed on a concrete pad alongside the building. New exterior ductwork extended up to the second-floor mechanical room, where our team reconnected to the existing duct system. Large sheet metal transitions and vertical duct sections were fitted around the building’s configuration, creating the connection between the ground-level equipment and the elevated mechanical space.

From the equipment removal to the finished exterior ductwork, this project combined practical problem-solving with skilled installation. SUI is proud to support Independence School with an HVAC upgrade tailored to the challenges of its building and the needs of its school community.
